LOS ANGELES - Senior Zana Munoย set a new UCLA single-match record for digs with 38, but the 21st-rankedย Bruins dropped a four-set decision to No. 19 Washington State on Thursday at Pauleyย Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 19-25, 29-27, 26-28, 21-25.

Muno's previous career high in digs was 34, while the former UCLA single-match record was 36 set by Chrissie Zartman and Taylor Formico. She had 12 digs in both the second and third sets, eight digs in the fourth and six in the first.ย

Sophomore Mac May led all players with 18 kills, adding nine digs. Junior Madeleine Gates added 15 kills and four blocks and senior Kyra Rogers had 11 kills and four digs. Junior Savvy Simo provided 16 digs, junior Kylie Miller had 56 assists, eight digs and two aces, sophomore Jenny Mosser posted seven kills and five digs, redshirtย freshman Alexis Light had seven kills and freshman Sawyer Aigner-Swesey tallied eight digs. The Bruins hit .198 for the match.

The Bruins (12-10, 7-8 Pac-12) led throughout most of set one, but a late Cougar run gave the visitors the opener. UCLA held as much as a four-point lead at 9-5 following a kill by Rogers. The Bruins still had the edge as late as 17-15 before Washington State recorded 10 of the next 12 points to win the first by a score of 25-19. May and Rogers both had four kills and Simoย notched five digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .333 to .200.

Set two featured nine ties and four lead changes. Down by as much as five at 20-15 and 22-17, the Bruins staged a furious rally to steal the second set. At 22-18, four in a row for UCLA on two Rogers kills, one by May and a bad WSU set evened things at 22. After a Cougar sideout, a May kill and ace gave the Bruins a set point at 24-23. Washington State saved the first try, but a Rogers kill allowed the Bruins another attempt at the set. The Cougars saved that one, but a Gates kill gave UCLA a third set point. However, WSU netted the next two to pick up a set point of its own. But the Bruins would not be denied, collecting the next three points on back-to-back Gates kills and the set winner by May to win the second by a score of 29-27. Gates and May each had seven kills, Rogers added four and Simo posted four digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Cougars, .255 to .211.

Set three was even tighter with 11 ties and five lead changes. Down 8-7, the Bruins scored six in a row on two Miller aces, two May kills, a Mosser/Rogers block and a WSU error. Then Washington State (19-6, 10-5 Pac-12) made its run, scoring 12 of the next 16 to go up by a set-best three at 20-17. The Bruins rallied to tie the score at 21, 22 and 23, earning a set point at 24-23 after a Light kill. The Cougars came back with the next two to go ahead 25-24. The Bruins saved set points at 25-24 and 26-25, but the Cougars would end up prevailing by a count of 28-26. May was 5-for-12 with no errors in the third, Light also had five kills and Gates added four. The Bruins were out-hit, .245 to .200.

The only lead for the Bruins in set four was one at 2-1. With WSU up 8-7, five in a row gave the visitors its biggest lead of the set at six. The Bruins would make a run, eventually tying things up at 18 and 19. But the Cougars scored six of the next eight points to win the fourth by a score of 25-21. Mosser was 4-for-8 with no errors in the fourth, Miller added three kills and Aigner-Swesey and Simo each had four digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .159 to .106.

The Bruins are back in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescomย on Saturday against No. 25 Washington at 7 p.m. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks Los Angeles.
