Top-Ranked Bruins Drop Close Match at SDSU

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The top-ranked Bruins finished tied for third in stroke play at the SDSU March Mayhem, advancing to the match play championship bracket on Monday morning. Then in the afternoon, UCLA lost a tough match with Northwestern, falling 3-2.
In 18 holes of stroke play to determine seeding for match play, the Bruins shot a 10-over 298. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano finished solo second with a 2-under 70. Starting on the 10th, she birdied her first hole, as well as #2, #5 and her final two holes (#8 and #9), adding three bogeys. Freshman Patty Tavatanakit tied for 15th following a 2-over 74, making two birdies on #18 and #11 and four bogeys. Senior Erin Choi and sophomore Clare Legaspi each tied for 34th (+5, 77). Choi made two birdies on #1 and #6, three bogeys and a quad, while Legaspi had three birdies (#17, #7 and #13), five bogeys and one triple. Junior Beth Wu tied for 44th (+8, 80), making her lone birdie on #1, seven bogeys and one double.
In match play in the afternoon versus the Wildcats, Legaspi took an early 3-up lead after winning the 11th, 12th and 13th holes, with halves the rest of the way on the inward nine. On the outward nine, none of the holes were halved, as Legaspi won #2, #3 and #6, while Riley claimed #1, #4, #5 and #7. The Bruin sophomore was 2-up heading to the eighth and would birdie the hole to finish off the 3&1 victory.
After two halves to open her match against Stephanie Lau, Wu won the 12th, 14th and 15th to go 3-up. Lau bounced back with victories at #17 and #18 to get to within one, and after a victory for Wu on the second to go back up by two, Lau claimed #3 and #5 to make the match all square. Wu would rebound with victories on #6 and #7, halving the eighth to win the match 2&1.
Tavatanakit fell 1-up to Sarah Cho. With the match starting on the 11th hole, Tavatanakit won #12, but Cho claimed #13 and #16 to go 1-up. The Bruin freshman birdied holes #1-#3, winning each, to go 2-up. However, Cho came back to win the final three holes (#8-#10) to post a 1-up victory. Galdiano never led against Hannah Kim, falling 3-down after Kim won #17, #1 and #2. The Bruin sophomore came back with wins at #3 and #4, but Kim claimed #5, #8 and #9 to win 4&2. Choi fell 6&4 to Janet Mao, who won the first three holes. Choi responded with wins on #14 and #16, but Mao claimed #18, #1, #3, #5 and #6 to record the victory.
The Bruins fall to the consolation bracket, where they will face California on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available here.
