UCLA, which will be taking part in its first match play tournament of the season, has won five times in 2017-2018, finishing second in its other two events. The Bruins were triumphant in their last tournament, the Wildcat Invitational (March 5-6), with Vu breaking a school record with her eighth career victory and setting a new program mark with a 54-hole total of 14-under 202.
In the Bruins' most recent match play event last March 13-14, they won the Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play at Brentwood Country Club. UCLA played two match play tournaments last season, finishing fourth at the East Lake Cup (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) after finishing second in stroke play.
Along with previous match play experience away from UCLA, Choi, Galdiano, Legaspi and Wu have all appeared in match play events as Bruins. Choi is 2-3-1 in her career in match play, going 1-1-1 at the Gifford last year and 1-2 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic as a freshman. Wu is 7-5-2 in two seasons of collegiate match play, going 1-0-2 at the Gifford Great 8, 0-2 at the East Lake Cup, 4-0 at the 2016 edition of the SDSU March Mayhem, 1-2 at the 2016 Liz Murphey and 1-1 at the '16 NCAA Championships. Galdiano was 2-3 in match play as a freshman, going 0-2 at the East Lake Cup and 2-1 at the Gifford Great 8. Legaspi went 3-1-1 last year in match play, including 2-0 at East Lake and 1-1-1 at the Gifford Great 8. Tavatanakit, who is playing in her first collegiate match play event, is coming off earning 4 1/2 points for the Asia-Pacific team at the Patsy Hankins Trophy earlier this month.
UCLA is playing in this tournament for the third time. In 2014, when it was mainly a stroke play event, the Bruins tied for second. UCLA placed third in 2016 when the SDSU March Mayhem was all match play.
