RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The top-ranked Bruins defeated California by a score of 4-1 in the match play consolation bracket at the SDSU March Mayhem at the Farms Golf Club on Tuesday.
Freshman Patty Tavatanakit recorded the widest margin of victory for UCLA, beating Amina Wolf, 7&5. Tavatanakit never trailed and lost only one hole. Starting the match on the eighth hole, the freshman claimed #9, #11, #12 and #14 before dropping her only hole, the 15th. Tavatanakit would go on to win the final four holes of the match (#17, #18, #1 and #2).
Junior Beth Wu knocked off Maria Herraez Galvez, 3&2. Wu also never trailed, with the match starting on hole #7, which was won by the UCLA junior. Galvez squared the match on the ninth, but Wu won #12 and #15 to go 2-up. Following a victory on #17 for Galvez, Wu won #1 and closed out the match with a win on #4.
Sophomore Mariel Galdiano also never trailed, winning by a similar 3&2 score to Marianne Li. Starting the match on #8, she went 3-up with wins on #9, #12 and #15. Li would win two of the next three holes (#16 and #18), but Galdiano claimed #17 and #3, with two more halves on #4 and #5 closing out the victory for the Bruin.
Senior Erin Choi won 2&1 over Jiyoon Jang. Starting on the ninth, the players split the first six holes, with Choi winning #10, #12 and #14 and Jang claiming #11, #13 and #15. Jang took a 1-up lead at #16, but Choi would win three in a row on #18, #1 and #2 to go 2-up, eventually extending the lead to 3-up on the fourth. Jang won #6, but a halve on #7 finished off the win for Choi. Sophomore Clare Legaspi fell, 5&3, to Marthe Wold. Legaspi won holes #14 and #17, but never led, as Wold claimed #8, #12, #13, #15, #16, #1 and #3.
The Bruins will face San Diego State in the fifth-place match on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available here.
