RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -
The top-ranked Bruins tied their fifth-place match against San Diego State on Wednesday, but came away with the victory on a tiebreaker on the final day of the SDSU March Mayhem at the Farms Golf Club.

The Bruins and the Aztecs each won two matches, with the fifth match being halved. But UCLA had a wider margin of holes won, 9-8, to finish in fifth place.

Freshman Patty Tavatanakit recorded a 5&3 victory over Haleigh Krause and never trailed. Tavatanakit won #8 and #13 to go 2-up before Krause claimed the 15th. Following a halve on #16, the Bruin freshman won three holes in a row (#17, #18 and #1), closing out the victory with a win on the third.

Junior Beth Wu also never trailed in her triumph over Sarah Kjellker. After five halves to open the match (#8-#12), Wu won #13, #15, #16 and #17 to go 4-up. Kjellker claimed her only hole on the 18th, but a Wu win on #3 again made the lead 4-up, with a halve on #4 closing out the match.

Sophomore Mariel Galdiano's match with Georgia Lacey would go the distance, ending in a half point for both teams. After a halve on the opening hole, #9, Galdiano won #10, but Lacey came back with victories on #11 and #12 to go 1-up. Galdiano then won #14 and #16, with Lacey winning #15, to make the match all square. Galdiano took a lead at the turn with a win on #18, but Lacey again tied things up on the third and took the lead back on #4. With two holes left, Galdiano came up with a victory on #7, with a halve on the eighth squaring the match.

Senior Erin Choi fell, 3&2, to Gioia Carpinelli, while sophomore Clare Legaspi lost to Milagros Chaves, 5&3. Choi won three holes, #9, #12 and #2, but Carpinelli claimed #7, #8, #10, #13, #1 and #4. Legaspi won just one hole, the 12th, dropping #8, #9, #10, #18, #3 and #4.

The Bruins return to stroke play competition at their next event, the Silverado Showdown, which will take place at Silverado Country Club in Napa, Calif. from April 8-10.
