SUGAR GROVE, Ill./CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The 21st-ranked Bruins open the 2018 season this weekend, with a starting five and two individuals playing at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Cedar Rapids Country Club and a group of four individuals heading to the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms.

GOLFWEEK CONFERENCE CHALLENGE PREVIEW/2017-2018 REVIEW
UCLA's first team event of the year begins on Sunday and runs through Tuesday at the Donald Ross Course at Cedar Rapids CC (par 72, 7,112 yards). Start times for the 54-hole tournament are 7:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. CT on Sunday and Monday off split tees and 7 a.m. PT/9 a.m. CT on Tuesday in a shotgun start. Joining the Bruins and host Iowa in the 16-team field are Arkansas State, Ball State, Boston College, Campbell, Dayton, Furman, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, Kansas State, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Southern Illinois and UTEP.

The starting five for the Bruins will be seniors Jack Ireland and Cole Madey, sophomores Devon Bling and Eddy Lai and freshman Sean Maruyama. Senior Patrick Murphy and junior Hidetoshi Yoshihara are playing as individuals.

Last season, UCLA advanced to the NCAA Championships, finishing inside the Top 5 in 10 of its 14 tournaments. The Bruins claimed a victory at the Southwestern Invitational, finished second at the Jackrabbit Invitational, the Marquette Intercollegiate and the El Macero Classic, tied for second at The Farms Invitational and tied for third at the Inverness Intercollegiate.

TEEING IT UP IN IOWA
--Madey, who won the Sahalee Players Championship in July, was named PING All-West Region and All-Pac-12 Conference Second Team as a junior. He led the Bruins in scoring average (71.9), posting five Top 10s. Madey was fourth at last year's Southwestern Invitational, seventh at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, tied for seventh at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, T-9 at the Inverness Intercollegiate and T-10 at the Pac-12 Championships. Along with tying for 11th at the NCAA Bryan Regional, Madey was also the only Bruin to advance to the final round of the NCAA Championships, tying for 29th.

--Ireland played in seven tournaments last season, posting a scoring average of 73.4. His best finish and lone Top 10 of the year came at the TMU Spring Invitational, where he placed solo second to teammate Phil Delisi. Ireland had five under-par rounds and a pair in the 60s, including a final-round, 6-under 66 at the TMU Spring Invite.

--Bling is coming off an outstanding summer that saw him finish runner-up at the U.S. Amateur in August and win the California State Fair over Labor Day weekend. In his freshman campaign, he had four Top 10s, including a victory at the Jackrabbit Invitational. Bling recorded 17 under-par rounds, with 13 of them in the 60s. He tied for fifth at both the Southwestern Invitational and the El Macero Classic and tied for eighth at the NCAA Bryan Regional. Bling was named to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team, ranking third on the squad with a 72.5 scoring average. 

--Lai posted a scoring average of 73.2 in his first season in Westwood, recording five Top 20s. His best finish of the season came at the Jackrabbit Invitational when he placed solo fifth. Lai had 13 under-par rounds, with six in the 60s. He shot a season-best, 6-under 66 in the final round of the Jackrabbit, while finishing under par overall in three tournaments.

--Maruyama prepped at Campbell Hall School (Studio City, Calif.), winning the 2017 CIF State/SCGA Southern California Regional boys title. He also tied for second at the CIF State boys golf championship and was the 2017 Los Angeles Daily News Golfer of the Year. Maruyama tied for 18th in stroke play at the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur.

--Murphy appeared in 10 tournaments last season, posting three Top 20s. His best finish came at the El Macero Classic when he tied for seventh, adding a T-17 showing at the Bill Cullum Invitational and a T-18 finish at the TMU Spring Invitational. Murphy recorded three under-par rounds.

--Yoshihara, an All-Pac-12 Second Team selection a year ago, was second on the team with a 72.1 scoring average, recording five Top 10s. He tied for second at The Farms Invitational, was third at the Southwestern Invitational, tied for third at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, tied for sixth at the Inverness Intercollegiate and tied for seventh at the El Macero Classic. Yoshihara had 14 under-par rounds, including eight in the 60s. His best round of the season came in the final round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (-7, 65).

NORTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE PREVIEW
Before the Bruins' first team event starts, four individuals will tee it up on Saturday and Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms (par 72, 7,281 yards). Play on Saturday will be 36 holes, beginning at 6:15 a.m. PT/8:15 a.m. CT (shotgun start), with another shotgun start (18 holes) on Sunday at 6:15 a.m. PT/8:15 a.m. CT.

The group of four individuals playing for the Bruins will be junior Harrison Mahon and freshmen Ahmed Ali, Rory Feng and Bryan Wiyang Teoh. Mahon played in one tournament a year ago, The Farms Invitational, finishing in a tie for 49th. Mahon has played in six events as a Bruin. Ali prepped at Palo Alto High School, earning First Team All-League honors all four years. He tied for second at the 2018 Central Coast Section Regional and tied for 16th at the CCS Finals. Feng, who attended Renmin University of China in Beijing, which did not have a golf team, was a member of the China National and Beijing Junior Golf teams. Teoh finished his high school career at Jupiter Christian School in Jupiter, Fla. He won the 2016 District title, finishing second in the Region and fourth in State.
