Emon van Loben Sels Qualifies for NCAA Individuals

MALIBU, Calif. – Emon van Loben Sels of the UCLA men's tennis team qualified for his first NCAA Championships singles draw with a strong showing at the ITA West Sectional Championships, hosted by Pepperdine.

The Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center was the site of singles and doubles matches featuring four Bruins and others from around the section. The singles quarterfinals included three Bruins – van Loben Sels, Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi.

The four singles semifinalists, as well as the two singles quarterfinal playoff winners, made the NCAA field. With his three-set victory against Hoogmartens in one of the quarterfinal playoff contests, van Loben Sels earned his berth.

On the first day of singles play, van Loben Sels and Tripathi eliminated two of the top three seeds. The former beat top-seeded and 73rd-ranked Max Basing of Stanford 6-2, 6-2, while the latter downed No. 3 seed and 38th-ranked Peter Makk of USC 6-2, 6-2.

The NCAA Championships individual tournaments, taking place in the fall as part of a two-year pilot program, runs No. 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
