Junior Rob Henkel (La Mesa, CA/Monte Vista HS) of the baseball team was selected the MET-Rx UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Mar. 20-27. Henkel struck out 18 Washington batters Sat., March 25 to set a new UCLA single-game strikeout record as the Bruins opened their Pac-10 Conference Schedule with a 2-1 ninth inning win. Henkel went the distance to pick up his fourth victory of the season, allowing just one run on four hits and no walks through nine innings. The southpaw opened the game by striking out the first nine straight batters, just one strikeout short of the NCAA consecutive strikeout record set by Barry Zito of UC Santa Barbara in 1997. Henkel also struck out the side five times, including the final four batters he faced in the game. Saturday's game marked the third straight appearance in which Henkel has recorded at least 16 strikeouts. In his last 22 IP, he has struck out a total of 50 opposing batters good for an average of 2.3 Ks per inning. For good measure, Henkel has only allowed five walks this season and has a strikeout to walk ratio of 70:5. He has won his last three starts and has a 4-1 record to go along with a 4.14 ERA and was named one of the three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week March 27 for the second time in just three weeks.
