Sophomore pitcher Amanda Freed (Cypress, CA/Pacifica HS) of the softball team was selected the MET-Rx UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Apr. 3-9. Freed, the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, carried the Bruins to a 3-0 record over the weekend with wins over Oregon (6-0) and Oregon State (4-1, 8-7). Freed pitched 20 of a possible 21 innings, earning all three victories in the circle. She struck out 21 batters and held opponents to a .174 batting averaging while allowing just five earned runs. She started the weekend by pitching six hitless innings after allowing two hits in the first to Oregon. Freed started on Saturday against Oregon State, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. At the plate, she hit .455 to help her own cause, going 5-for-11 with three runs scored, two doubles and an RBI. In Sunday's game, the only one of the weekend in which she was not the starting pitcher, she went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Behind Freed's play, UCLA remains the only team in the Pac-10 with an undefeated conference record.
